Shopify Variants vs Podifai Options
Choose whether a product choice belongs in Shopify or Podifai.
Use Shopify variants for choices that define the actual item being sold. Use Podifai options for the personalization applied to that item. Combining both systems correctly keeps the selected SKU, price, inventory, image, and customization data accurate through cart and checkout.
Quick Decision Guide
| Choice controls | Recommended setup |
|---|---|
| SKU or the actual item added to cart | Shopify variant |
| Base product price | Shopify variant |
| Variant inventory | Shopify variant |
| Product size or manufacturing color | Shopify variant |
| Variant product image | Shopify variant |
| Engraving or personalized text | Podifai option |
| Font, text color, or placement | Podifai option |
| Customer-uploaded artwork | Podifai option |
| Decorative graphics or add-ons | Podifai option |
Recommended Combined Setup
A common setup is to keep color and size as native Shopify variants, then add Podifai personalization on top. For example, Shopify can manage a red, blue, and black shirt in several sizes, while Podifai collects the shopper's monogram text, font, thread color, and uploaded logo.
- Shopify keeps the selected SKU, base price, and inventory accurate.
- Podifai saves the personalization as line item properties with the order.
- Variant Image can keep Live Preview on the shopper's selected product color.
Use Variant Image as the Live Preview Background
Podifai provides four Live Customizer background choices:
- Blank Canvas
- Shopify Product Image
- Custom Image
- Variant Image
Choose Variant Image when the background should follow the Shopify variant selected by the shopper. Create the variants and assign their images in Shopify first, then position the Podifai Live Preview layers on top.
Why the First Variant Reaches the Cart
A Podifai color, badge, dropdown, or swatch value is normally stored as customization information. It does not automatically replace the Shopify variant ID submitted by the product form. If the shopper sees a color name in the cart properties but the SKU, price, or inventory still belongs to the first variant, the color was likely created as a custom option instead of a native Shopify variant.
To fix the setup:
- Create or keep the SKU-bearing color and size choices as Shopify variants.
- Assign the correct image, price, SKU, and inventory to each Shopify variant.
- Remove the duplicate Podifai option if it represents the same product-defining choice.
- Keep engraving, uploads, fonts, graphics, and similar personalization in Podifai.
- Choose Variant Image as the Live Preview background when the preview should follow the selected variant.
- Test the selected variant in cart and checkout.
Variant Linking Inside Podifai
Podifai can also link option values to Shopify variants for inventory tracking or variant-based add-on pricing. This is useful for components or add-ons, but it is different from selecting the base product variant submitted by the Shopify product form.
FAQ
Why does the cart still contain the first Shopify variant?
A Podifai option is saved as customization data and does not automatically replace the Shopify variant ID. Use native Shopify variants for choices that control SKU, base price, inventory, size, product color, or the actual variant added to cart.
Can Live Preview follow the selected Shopify variant image?
Yes. Choose Variant Image as the Live Customizer background. Podifai then uses the image assigned to the shopper's currently selected Shopify variant.
Should product color be a Shopify variant or a Podifai option?
Use a Shopify variant when color must control SKU, price, inventory, checkout, or the variant image. Use a Podifai option when color is only personalization data, such as engraving text color or a decorative layer.
