Dynamic Pricing

Use fixed surcharges or Shopify variant prices as option value price adjustments.

Dynamic Pricing lets merchants charge extra for customization. Use option value price adjustments for predefined choices, and field-level Price Add-ons for Text Input, Text Area, and Image Upload.

Overview

Dynamic Pricing lets customization choices change the product price. For value-based options, this is shown as Price adjustment on each option value. For input and upload fields, this is shown as a Price Add-on field.

You can leave a choice free, add a fixed surcharge, or use Add variant price when a value should follow pricing from Shopify.

Price Adjustment Modes

For option values, the Price adjustment dropdown supports three modes:

  • No additional charge — The option value does not add anything to the base product price.
  • Fixed surcharge — Podifai adds a fixed amount that you enter manually.
  • Add variant price — Podifai adds the current price of a linked Shopify product or variant.

Where Price Add-ons Apply

Pricing can be added in two places:

  • Option values — Image Swatch, Color Swatch, Font Swatch, Dropdown, and Badge Group values can each have their own price adjustment.
  • Input and upload fields — Text Input, Text Area, and Image Upload can use a fixed Price Add-on for the field.

For Image Upload, the add-on applies once per upload option when the customer uses that upload field. Quantity-based upload pricing is not available yet, but may change when quantity selector support is added.

Fixed Surcharge

Use Fixed surcharge when the option always adds the same amount, such as +$5 for engraving, +$12 for gift wrapping, or +$20 for premium material. The surcharge appears next to the option in the storefront customizer and is included in the personalization line item when the order is placed.

Add a fixed surcharge

Select Fixed surcharge and enter the amount that should be added when shoppers choose the option.

Fixed surcharge on the storefront

The surcharge appears next to the option and is included in the final configured price.

Add Variant Price

Use Add variant price when the option value should follow pricing from Shopify. You can select a product directly, or select any variant under a product that has variants. If the Shopify product has only one purchasable item, Podifai links to that single item.

After a Shopify item is linked, Podifai uses the item's current Shopify price as the additional charge. When a merchant changes that product or variant price in Shopify admin, the additional charge shown by Podifai updates automatically without editing the customizer again.

Setup

  1. Select any option value in the editor.
  2. Open Price adjustment.
  3. Choose No additional charge, Fixed surcharge, or Add variant price.
  4. For Fixed surcharge, enter the surcharge amount.
  5. For Add variant price, select the Shopify product or variant to link.
  6. The additional charge displays next to the option label in the storefront customizer.

How Pricing Works

Price adjustments are added to the base product price. When a customer selects multiple options with pricing, all selected adjustments are summed together.

  • No additional charge — Adds $0.
  • Fixed surcharge — Adds the amount saved in Podifai.
  • Add variant price — Adds the current Shopify price of the linked product or variant.
Pricing is additive: base product price + all selected option adjustments = final price shown to the customer.

For multi-select options, each selected value can add its own price once. For example, if a customer selects three different paid charms from one Image Swatch, Podifai adds the price adjustment for each selected charm.

Podifai does not currently multiply a value's price by a shopper-entered quantity inside the customizer. Quantity selector support is planned separately.

When the Linked Variant Is Out of Stock

Price adjustments and inventory can both reference Shopify variants. If Add variant price is linked to a Shopify variant that has no stock, Podifai automatically selects the same variant for inventory and greys out the inventory selector.

This prevents a storefront conflict where pricing is based on one variant but availability is based on another. When the linked variant is unavailable, the option value can use the same disabled storefront state described in Inventory & Variants.

Pricing & Inventory Independence

Pricing and inventory stay independent when they do not need to use the same Shopify variant. For example, one option value can use a fixed surcharge without tracking stock, while another can track inventory through a linked Shopify variant without adding a price adjustment.

  • A color option can have a surcharge without tracking inventory.
  • A size option can track inventory via variant linking without changing the price.
  • An option value can use Add variant price and linked inventory together when price and stock should come from the same Shopify item.

Podifai only forces inventory to the same linked variant when it is needed to avoid an out-of-stock conflict.

Currency Formatting

The Podifai admin/editor may currently show a dollar symbol as the default UI symbol. On the live storefront and at checkout, price add-ons follow the currency context that Shopify provides for the customer.

For single-currency stores, add-on prices display in the store currency. If your store uses Shopify Markets, add-on prices follow the customer's active market currency and Shopify's market pricing setup. Depending on how the market is configured, Shopify can use automatic exchange rates, manual exchange rates, rounding rules, price adjustments, or fixed international prices. This means the displayed add-on amount is not always a simple real-time exchange-rate conversion.

Podifai does not use third-party currency converter apps as its source of exchange rates. Some third-party apps only change how prices look on the storefront, while Shopify checkout may still use the store's default currency or the Shopify Markets currency. If your store uses a third-party currency app, test the product page, cart, and checkout for each active market.

Percentage Price Adjustments

Percentage-based price increases and decreases are coming soon. Until the feature is released, use a fixed surcharge or the price of a linked Shopify product or variant.

Loyalty, Rewards, and Other Third-Party Apps

Some third-party storefront apps read only the Shopify product's base price and do not automatically detect Podifai's real-time add-on price. This can affect product-page points badges, rewards estimates, upsells, or other price-based widgets.

  1. Check whether the third-party app can read the current or real-time price, including add-ons.
  2. Place a test order and confirm the final cart, checkout, and paid order totals.
  3. Check whether rewards or points are calculated from the final paid total even if the product-page badge is different.
  4. Contact the third-party app's support team for its integration-specific settings.
Every third-party app handles dynamic prices differently. Podifai Support can help investigate the storefront setup, but the other app may need to enable or implement support for real-time add-on prices.

FAQ

What is the difference between Price adjustment and Price Add-on?

Price adjustment applies to predefined option values such as swatches, dropdown values, badges, and font choices. Price Add-on applies to input or upload fields such as Text Input, Text Area, and Image Upload.

Can each selected value add its own price?

Yes. For multi-select options, each selected value can add its own price once. For example, three selected paid charms can each add their own price adjustment.

How does Image Upload pricing work?

Image Upload can use a fixed Price Add-on. The add-on applies once per upload option when the customer uses that upload field.

Does Podifai support quantity-based pricing?

Not yet. Podifai does not currently multiply a value's price by a shopper-entered quantity inside the customizer. Quantity selector support is planned separately.

How does currency work for price add-ons?

On the live storefront and at checkout, price add-ons follow the currency context Shopify provides for the customer. For Shopify Markets, the displayed amount depends on the market pricing setup, not always a simple real-time exchange-rate conversion.

Can an option increase or decrease the product price by a percentage?

Percentage-based price adjustments are coming soon. Until they are released, use the currently available fixed surcharge or linked Shopify variant price.

Why does a loyalty or third-party app read only the base product price?

Some third-party apps read only Shopify's base product price. Check whether the app can read the current real-time price including add-ons, test the final cart and checkout total, and contact the third-party app's support team for integration-specific settings.
